The ECDIS employs intelligently arranged Graphic User Interface elements that deliver task-based operation scheme to give the operator direct access to necessary operational procedure. Also, the new ECDIS utilises cutting edge chart-drawing engine that delivers instantaneous chart redraw with the seamless zooming and panning, hence making the ECDIS operation stress-free.

Danelec ECDIS systems run 100% on Linux, which is a guarantee for stability, security and high performance. The Linux operating system requires less processing power and memory compared to Windows-based systems, freeing more room for chart storage, while providing superior resistance to virus and malware. ^ ECDIS Companies should be aware of IMO/SOLAS performance standards for ECDIS, particularly when installing new electronic navigation systems onboard their ships. The definition of an ECDIS and its use is specified in IMO ECDIS Performance Standards (IMO Resolution A.817 (19) and Resolution MSC.232 (82)): Ett ECDIS är ett IMO-godkänt, datorbaserat navigationssystem som kan användas tillsammans med, eller istället för, papperssjökort och dess tillhörande besticksutrustning (Becker-Heins, 2014).

Current research is aimed at providing Marine Information Objects (MIO) which are time variant and needed by the mariner in wartime or peacetime for more effective performance of electronic chart systems as a real-time GIS application in the marine The ECDIS employs intelligently arranged Graphic User Interface elements that deliver task-based operation scheme to give the operator direct access to necessary operational procedure.

ECDIS in operation comprises hardware, software and data. It is important for the safety of navigation that the application software within the ECDIS works fully in accordance with the Performance Standards and is capable of displaying all the relevant digital information contained within the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC).

ECDIS Familiarisation has, therefore been defined as: Familiarisation: Following the successful demonstration Almost three-quarters of cargo ships over 20,000 gross tonnage (GT) are already compliant with the SOLAS-mandated Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) deadline of 1st July 2017, according to the latest figures published by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) . May 2017. The primary function of ECDIS is to enhance the safety of navigation, but experience is showing that installation and approval alone are not enough to achieve this goal. Comprehensive training, including type-specific familiarisation, and updated Safety Management System (SMS) procedures are essential to ensure safe ECDIS use without introducing new risk. The ECDIS Procedures guide contains a practical and concise framework with supporting information and check-lists to help companies implement best practice in the use of ECDIS. The ECDIS Procedures Guide contains information on: The electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) is governed by a number of standards and regulations.
